چکیده

Biological noise has already been shown to play a constructive role in neuronal processing and reliability, according to a phenomenon known as stochastic resonance (SR). This phenomenon has been previously observed by the authors in the detection of electromagnetic (EM) fields in the case of an additive white Gaussian input, roughly approximating the ensemble of noise sources. Recently, attention has been devoted to channel noise which plays a significant role in neuronal processing, being at the basis of some well-known behaviors like response unreliability, missing spikes during firing, or spontaneous action potentials in resting state. Here, an HH-like neuronal model is set up and accurate channels stochastic models are adopted to investigate possible noise-induced enhancements in the detection of EM fields. Key-Words: EM field, signal detection, HH neuronal model, channel noise, stochastic resonance

Effect of Non Gaussian Noises on the Stochastic Resonance-Like Phenomenon in Gated Traps

We exploit a simple one-dimensional trapping model introduced before, prompted by the problem of ion current across a biological membrane. The voltage-sensitive channels are open or closed depending on the value taken by an external potential that has two contributions: a deterministic periodic and a stochastic one. Here we assume that the noise source is colored and non Gaussian, with a q-depe...

Restoring the encoding properties of a stochastic neuron model by an exogenous noise

Here we evaluate the possibility of improving the encoding properties of an impaired neuronal system by superimposing an exogenous noise to an external electric stimulation signal. The approach is based on the use of mathematical neuron models consisting of stochastic HH-like circuit, where the impairment of the endogenous presynaptic inputs is described as a subthreshold injected current and t...

Stochastic resonance and sensory information processing: a tutorial and review of application.

OBJECTIVE To review the stochastic resonance phenomena observed in sensory systems and to describe how a random process ('noise') added to a subthreshold stimulus can enhance sensory information processing and perception. RESULTS Nonlinear systems need a threshold, subthreshold information bearing stimulus and 'noise' for stochastic resonance phenomena to occur. These three ingredients are ub...

Aperiodic stochastic resonance.

Stochastic resonance ~SR! is a phenomenon wherein the response of a nonlinear system to a weak periodic input signal is optimized by the presence of a particular level of noise. Recently, we presented a method and theory for characterizing SR-type behavior in excitable systems with aperiodic ~i.e., broadband! input signals @Phys. Rev. E 52, R3321~1995!#. We coined the term aperiodic stochastic ...

The silencing of neuronal activity by noise and the phenomenon of inverse stochastic resonance

Neurons in the central nervous system are affected by complex and noisy signals due to fluctuations in their cellular environment and in the inputs they receive from many other cells . Such noise usually increases the probability that a neuron will send out a signal to its target cells . In stochastic resonance, which occurs in many physical and biological systems, an optimal response is found ...
